In her second time as co-host of the Country Music Association Awards, country darling Carrie Underwood had to be a quick-change artist—she rocked eight different outfits that night during her appearances on stage!
Her hair (and her hemlines) went up and down...all beautifully created and controlled with Bumble and Bumble flawless products!
America has the Grammys and the VMAs, but across the pond, music’s biggest night is the MTV European Music Awards. And Saturday night in Madrid, the hottest stars in the biz showed up on the EMA red carpet looking every bit the unique artists that they are. While there were definitely some major “what was she thinking?!” moments, there were also some surprising standouts. We were glad to see that Katy Perry ditched the electric blue wig and instead paired her bedazzled Jeremy Scott frock with a slicked and sleek top knot/ponytail combo and tame makeup. Her gal pal Rihanna also hit a red carpet home run. The pop star looked absolutely stunning in a cream ruffled gown with her red locks pulled into a modern beehive with sweeping bangs. She completed her ensemble with peach eye shadow, baby pink lipstick and deep burgundy fingertips. We also gave booty-shaking songbird Shakira’s style two enthusiastic thumbs up. The EMA opening entertainer complemented her metallic mini and black pumps with equally rockin’ locks. Her blonde strands were left loose, tousled and styled into a middle part for a carefree-yet-put-together look. Clean, matte makeup completed her red carpet getup.
THE TREND: Short hair and high buns.
WHO LOVES IT: Jacqueline Bush, celebrity stylist, Exclusive Artists Management
You’ve seen these looks on: Ashlee Simpson, Emma Watson and Janet Jackson (short hair) and Jessica Alba and Sienna Miller (high bun)
“I love Emma’s adorable pixie, Janet’s new short hair and Ashlee’s fresh ‘do,” says Jacqueline. “And the high bun is a great styling option for women with long hair.”
Tips for recreating: The best short cuts are done with a razored texture, and each of these short cuts have round layering. Don’t forget to texturize heavily. “That makes the difference between fresh and modern and ‘soccer mom,’” says Jacqueline. The high bun works best on long hair. First, prep wet strands with René Furterer Vegetal Sculpting Gel then blow dry for volume and bounce. Create a center part then tease the hair at the crown. Leaving a few pieces out around the face, brush hair up into a high ponytail. “It’s okay if the ponytail is not perfect,” she notes. “A slightly undone finish is what makes the look more modern.” The trick to the look is to pin a hair extension “doughnut” at the base of the pony then wrap the pony around the doughnut and pin for added volume and shape. Finish with a small bit of shine pomade and holding spray.

Let's take a pause from the turkey and trimmings to be thankful for something truly important this year: great celeb styles at the 2010 American Music Awards! From Rihanna's red spirals to Taylor Swift's suprisingly straight tresses, celebrities brought their A-game to the red carpet. And while there were some misses—FYI Avril Lavigne...it's no longer 2002—there were several great styles worthy of some love.
Rihanna
Rihanna's been in a red mood lately, but this was the first time she's modeled the dark red spirals. The voluminous, retro style complemented her red lace dress perfectly. Celebrity stylist, Ursula Stephen, used a Brazilian Heat ceramic curling iron to create the look. She told Essence.com: "First, I sectioned Rihanna's hair in small pieces. Then, I sprayed it with Motions Light Hold Working Spritz, and wrapped each section around a 3/4" Brazilian Heat ceramic curling iron. Once I released each curl, I combed it quickly before it cooled to create a fluffy, not-so-tight look. When her whole head was curled, I gave her hair a final spray of the Working Spritz, and the look was set."
Taylor Swift
Going the opposite of curly-haired RiRi, Swift straightened her normal spirals into a sleek, sophisticated blond style—finished off with a perfect, eyebrow-grazing fringe.
Katy Perry
Talk about the newlywed glow! Perry left her colorful wigs and bright make-up at home, sticking to her normal, glossy dark hair and make-up in shades of pale pink to play up her porcelain skin. Her look was completed with a pale pink dress—perfectly beautiful for a new bride.
Kesha
Continuing to polarize audiences on her style, Kesha's look inspired both love and hate. Her edgy image is often reminiscent of a less dramatic Lady Gaga. But when faced with a bevy of fresh-faced, identical starlets on the red carpet, how can you not love Kesha's pushing of the boundaries?
We have the perfect color formula and process for the client who wants to go a tad darker like Jennifer Garner, but isn’t quite ready to give up her beachy glow this holiday season.

It can take adecade or more to establish yourself as a red carpet stunner, but look how quickly Lea Lichele has done just that!
It's hard to believe that this is only the second season on television for GLEE; she shines just as brightly on the red carpet, where she showcases her sophisticated sense of style.
A "Bumble Worshiper" she can't live without QUENCHING Shampoo & Conditioner. Her favorite styling product is GROOMING CREME.
Rock Goddess PINK is just one of the stars who shimmer in short hair.
It's easy to maintain, dries quickly and never drifts too far out of its intended shape.
But while super-short hair offers undeniable convenience, it also communicates confidence. You don't assume a woman in a closely cropped coif has difficult hair to style or travels extensively or swims daily. You look at her and think, "That woman knows who she is!"
Part your hair on the side using a fine tooth comb.
Apply a small dab of Bumble and bumble "GEL", beginning at the roots and working down to mid-length of hair.
Using a natural bristle brush (try Bumble's NEW FLAT BRUSH), brush hair back to create a very sleek, low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Secure with a coated elastic hair-band.
Take a small section of hair from the ponytail, and wrap it around the elastic band, securing well with two bobby pins. Finish with Bumble's "SPRAY de MODE" for hold, shine and humidity protection. Beautiful !
Natalie Portman looked every bit like a classic Hollywood starlet at the New York Premiere of Black Swan. Wearing a glamorous black Dior off-the-shoulder dress and gorgeous, full-bodied wavy hair, she dazzled on the red carpet.
Her stylist John D. was tempted to do an elegant updo, but succumbed to the glamour of the dress and created a look that accented its sense of drama and its sensuous silhouette. John D. started with a cocktail of Bumble and bumble's GROOMING CREME and THICKENING SPRAY for soft hold and shine, then blow dried the hair smooth using a round brush to give it 'oomph' at the root. “Natalie has naturally curly hair and it needs extra moisture to look its best,” he explains.
Next he used a 1-inch curling iron and, starting at the back of her head, curled round sections all over her head to set the volume in. John D. finished Natalie’s hair with Bumble's CLASSIC Hairspray. “It was raining during the premiere and I wanted to make absolutely sure the body stayed.” After her hair cooled, he sprayed a paddle brush with CLASSIC hairspray and used it to separate and loosen the hair, which also tamed the curls at the same time.
Love the party look of a sophisticated braided bun? Well, so does every other A-List celeb this holiday season!
Here's how you can create one at home!
Smooth hair back with the new (and long-awaited) Bumble & bumble FLAT BRUSH into a low ponytail, securing with an elastic band.
Smooth a dime-size dab of Bb GROOMING CREME throughout the lengths of the ponytail for soft, smooth control...with shine!
Braid the ponytail and wrap the braid around the base of the ponytail, then tuck the ends under. Secure with pretty rhinestone bobby pins. (We've got tons of them this season!)
Finish with Bumble's SPRAY DE MODE for perfect hold and holiday shine!
Still need help? Call 340-1700 and ask for Kristi....she's a master at it!
Ladies and gentlemen we present to you the Undercut. This hairstyle can most recently be seen sported by the handsome Michael Pitt from Boardwalk Empire, set in the "prohibition period" of the 1920's and 30's, and directed by Scorcese.
Much more daring in women, the Undercut was THE haircut of 2010 sported by the likes of Alice Dellal, Rihanna, and Cassie, and has already been on the scene for a while.
In men the style is still quite original, especially with the slicked back touch. The style itself is said to have originated during the Great Depression, and is also known as the bowl cut in men, which definitely does not sound as cool.
It's actually exactly what it sounds like. Putting a bowl on your head and cutting around the edges, thus identifying the poor who couldn't afford going to the barber.
Nevertheless they were the great creators of this style which was in and out of fashion through out the century, emerging mostly in the 1970's-80's with the punk sub cultures.
And when parted down the middle also known as the wedge, extremely popular in the 90's for teens. Now back in 2011, I'm foreseeing it to be the next big thing in guys. Sorry boys the high pony tails and the longer hair was hot, but if you were just doing that for style it's time to move on ;)
With so many award ceremonies in Hollywood, how is there not a well-coiffed golden statuette for great hair? We haven’t made the trophy, but we have made the call: These are the best celebrity hairstyles of the year.
JULIA ROBERTS - BEST HIGHLIGHTS
Blonde streaks just at the ends (not root to tip) give Roberts's beachy waves a sun-kissed look.
The natural face—call it contoured, called it minimal, call it bronzy, or just call it pretty—had quietly powerful moments everywhere from Proenza Schouler to Stella McCartney and Balmain.
Divine in its simplicity, the impossible-to-ignore power lip comes in all shades this season—from glossy reds and shocking pinks to glow-in-the-dark orange.
The decorated head—crowned with hand-carved wood barrettes at Rodarte, jeweled grosgrain clips at Erdem, empress-worthy bijoux at Marchesa, and exquisite feather-and-chain embellishments at Chanel—makes a convincing case for the couture hair accessory.
We've got the coolest ones right here at Cottonwood!

PENELOPE CRUZ - BEST CHIGNON

DIANE KRUGER - BEST ACCESSORY
Hair accessories can sometimes look costumey or childish, but Kruger's elegant leaf adds the perfect finishing touch to a soft updo.

BLAKE LIVELY - BEST HALF-PONYTAIL
Lively's lightly teased half-ponytail has great volume—and her humdrum hair elastic is cleverly hidden by a loop of hair pinned around the base.
Our male clients are loving this new, updated cut, think retro!
Meagan, one of our resident designers with a huge male following says that styles inspired by the mod-rocker movement of the 1970s are becoming more popular with guys.
For this style, Meagan incorporated a heavily textured front and sides, then used classic barbering techniques on the lower part of the cut to create head shape and interest.
Out of the shower, just work-in a nickel-sized amount of Bumble's GROOMING CREME for soft hold. After drying, just a little of Bumble's SUMOTECH for "piecing it out"...and making it all "bed-roomy".

New year, new you! Lauren Conrad took her newly juicy-brunette strands to the CoverGirl 50th Anniversary Celebration.
Lauren's shade transformation took her from buttery blonde to golden brown — a new shade that resembles that of the most famous bride-to-be, Kate Middleton. It's hard to resist the comparison, especially when she shows up with her long, glossy locks worn loose and wavy.
Earlier this week, our own Master Colorist, Ashley Green says, “Kate’s look reflects beautiful nuances of tone-on-tone brown reflection, there's depth and dimension....it's bed-roomy brown!"

Staying true to her iconic style, Diane Keaton’s chic hair compliments this classic beauty perfectly.
The cut is simply a layered bob, with soft texture created in the crown and around the face and fringe to modernize the classic shape.
Try it: According to Jen, our Artistic Educator, texture can be created by using a feather razor or with a straight shear. “Volume and texture can be achieved by using Bumble's "THICKENING SPRAY" and "GROOMING CREME" she says. “Using a large round-brush for volume on the crown, and softness on the sides and fringe, will give this cut a finish that is both sophisticated and modern, just like Diane Keaton!”
The only way to understand curly hair is to respect it for the wonderful fabric that it is. When working with naturally curly hair, be aware of the natural pattern.
Sam Villa, founding partner of the Sam Villa® brand and Education Artistic Director for Redken informs us not to over-stretch the hair to discover the curl's pattern. Instead, Sam advises using a large wide-toothed comb with teeth that are set apart, allowing it to glide easily along the natural curl pattern. A fine-toothed comb has teeth set close together designed to grab hair for maximum tension, and they can stretch curly hair too much, causing the curl to snap back, making it harder to read its natural pattern.
Sam designed his Signature Series Combs with silicone and graphite resins for the smoothest glide possible.
Cameron Diaz is the quintessential California blonde, and on the current cover of Harper’s Bazaar she sports a cooler, more grown up version of her signature hue.

To make a bride happy it takes patience, planning and persistence. Brides SHOULD be particular since it's important to stay current on trends not only for hair, but also in regards to nail color.
This season, consider switching things up a bit and stay away from pale shades for daring brides. Consider a fun, flirty shade of blue, purple or fuchsia instead of light pink or traditional French manicures.
Kate Winslet shocked fans when she debuted a very short, very blonde style on the cover of British Vogue this month.
The look, by renowned hairdresser Orlando Pita, is a dramatic departure from her former shoulder length, dirty blonde locks. “I think Kate is very versatile and can wear many different looks,” Pita tells MODERN SALON. “We chose this look because the photographer Mario Testino wanted to give her a very different look. The fashion in the story was black and white so we decided to go with almost white hair and cut it short and choppy.”
Although particularly stunning on Kate because of her porcelain complexion, the look can be adapted to suit anyone, “as long as they are up for it,” adds Pita. “The shade of platinum blonde can be tweaked to suit different skin tones as well as the cut and style to suit different face shapes.”
Looking to create shape without losing length? Try this flattering cut. Celebrity colorist and owner of his eponymous salon in NYC, Julien Farel, gives this model a face-flattering cut complete with a heavy fringe. Va va voom!
THE LOOK: Sleeveless or strapless lace and jacquard dresses in soft neutrals; loose waves or sleek straight hair with highlights, and deep tans
TIMOTHY JOHN (Celebrity Stylist): Nicky and Paris both look beautiful. They are sisters, they are a team and they look great together. Their clothing, hair and makeup all complement each other.
Paris has super fine hair, multi-processed hair. This style is achieved through using extensions. The color matches perfectly. The transition between her natural hair and her extensions is seamless. Most likely this was accomplished by using a 1.5 to 2 inch barrel iron. I would use Bumble's "DOES IT ALL" for heat protection and perfect curls. This is a definite look that clients love and can be replicated easily at home with the right products.
Nicky's hair is a basic flat-ironed look that could be softened up with some side swept bangs or soft layers around her face. We are definitely dealing with a "fly-away" situation. I would suggest using a light hairspray like Bumble's "SPRAY de'MODE" or texture cream like Bumble's "TEXTURE". The center part is very popular right now, but be careful—it can look severe.
We love Kim's braid in the front! We are seeing a lot of front braids like these to get hair out of the face. Most of the hair is long with help from extensions. We recommend clip-in extensions for this look.
Try using Bumble and bumble's "GROOMING CREME" to tame fly-aways for a gorgeous, smooth, healthy braid.
All of their hair looks very healthy. I am constantly dealing with clients who want naturally long hair, and never want a trim. I am continually educating them to the fact that many of these popular long styles are achieved with extensions.
It's official: Fringe is more fabulous than ever! “Bangs have made a huge comeback in Hollywood,” declares celebrity hairstylist David Babaii, who created bangs for both Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman at this season's award shows.
“No matter if you wear your hair down or up, bangs add a style statement of their own.”
Babaii, who also styled Emma Stone for this month’s Glamour, says anyone can pull off a bang, provided the cut suits them. “They can be short, rounded or straight bangs so they fit their face shape.”
He recommends having clients try on a wig so they can see what their bangs will look like before the cut—which is exactly what he does with his superstar clientele.
More styling suggestions from Babaii:
• Let bangs grow a bit longer to sweep to one side and clip with a hair accessory
• Create piecey bangs by using a paste to create and define separations
• Use a flat iron and something like Pequi Oil to create a shiny dramatically straight bang
• Texturize bangs to give them a different look
• Use a large round brush to bump the ends under to soften the line
These six stars below have made bangs a part of their everyday look, and we say they've nailed the perfect bangs for their individual style. In fact, we're calling them the top six bangs in Hollywood. Do you agree? Have we left any best bangs off the list?
Olivia Wilde's fringe is long, wispy and a bit sexy. It camouflages a high forehead while setting off her eyes.
Reese Witherspoon's longer, sideswept bangs soften the angles of her heart-shaped face. They can easily be pinned to the side or pulled back to switch things up.
Long time Bumble user, Reese's favorite product is "DOES IT ALL". "I've been using "DOES IT ALL" before it was available for retail. I used to buy it from the Bumble stylists at the runway shows before it even had a name!"
Nicole Richie's bangs are from an oldie hairstyle (Nicole has since grown them out), but a goodie. We loved her bangs in its many variations, and this long fringe with her hippie hairstyle is a favorite.
"I've used Bumble's "CLASSIC" hairspray since I can remember.....I really can't live without it."
